Once, though, it was a sleepy rural village whose pioneer settlers came from many places to build a town and a way of life.
Virgie V. Jones tells the story of the old and the new Alamo, tracing the area back almost 130 years. She writes in a unique and lively manner, combining her own personal experiences and extensive research into a personalized, pictorial, social history of the area.
Remembering Alamo covers politics, schools, clubs, organizations, "firsts" for Alamo, services and changes, and many other topics. It includes personal vignettes and genealogies of pioneer families of the San Ramon Valley.
A stickler for accuracy in historical facts, Mrs. Jones has used pioneer memoirs, an original map (drafted when she couldn't obtain one to properly describe Alamo's location), and photographs from the files of the San Ramon Valley Historical Society and her own personal collection. Her index contains nearly 4,000 subjects.
Remembering Alamo is the first history of this interesting area. It has been endorsed and approved by the San Ramon Valley Historical Society, the American Revolution Bicentennial Committee of Contra Costa County, and the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County.
Endorsed by The Contra Costa County Bicentennlal Committee.
