Days Gone By - Volume 3

I have been a newspaper reporter for most of my adult life since graduating from UC Berkeley. My first newspaper job was as society editor for the Contra Costa Gazette, where I learned to spell such important words as stephanotis and benedict, and also had a delightful time trying to squeeze the words "Women of the Moose" into one-column headlines.

My husband's job took us to Oregon for 19 years, where we raised our six children and I worked for a weekly newspaper.

In 1969 we moved to Moraga. I went to work for the Concord Transcript, a Lesher newspaper. I started out as the assistant to the society editor, and eventually got into the newsroom covering cops, robbers, and the Concord City Hall.

I've always had a passion for the "small stuff" of local history, and started writing my weekly column "Days Gone By" for the Contra Costa Times in 1987.

This photograph was taken by my mother in 1935 when I was eight years old. We were on a motor trip to Canada, driving the old Columbia River Highway in my Dad's 1929 Model A Ford. My mother had me pose on a bluff overlooking the construction site of the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. I thought it an appropriate photo for a book about days gone by.
