Pioneer Portuguese of Contra Costa County

Pioneer Portuguese of Contra Costa County

Bernard Freedman compiled over 300 short life histories of many of the early Portuguese who settled in Contra Costa. The typical Portuguese immigrants were from the Azores and often began life in Contra Costa as simple farm laborers. Most of the new arrivals were illiterate. Hard working, they soon they were leasing land and paying with part of their crop. With their savings the Portuguese then bought their own farms. They eventually became important in the northern California dairy industry. The Portuguese were quick to learn English, formed their own fraternal organizations and were devoted to their church. The CD is in a searchable PDF format and is both Windows and Mac compatible.
