This year's program Celebrating Two Anniversaries highlights the milestone of our own historical society as well as that of the extraordinary travels of the Anza Expedition. CCCHS75 will be presented by CCCHS staff and board, and Anza250 will be presented by Beverly Lane, a local history museum curator, author, California historian, and resident of San Ramon Valley.

As the Declaration of Independence was being written, the Anza colonizing expedition arrived at its destination in San Francisco. Expedition members, 240 in total, included men, women, and children representing a mix of Indigenous, African, and European heritage.
In present-day Contra Costa County, Anza’s exploratory group camped near Rodeo at the mouth of the San Pablo Bay. The next day, they stopped on a hill just west of the Carquinez Bridge and noted Mare Island and the Puerto Dulce (Suisun Bay). They continued to the Martínez area and camped near Concord.

And as the first color TV program was being broadcast by CBS in 1950, the idea of creating a Contra Costa County historical society was first discussed by Louis Stein and Judge A.F. Bray, both of whom were serving on the County Development Association at the time. On April 30, 1951, the Contra Costa County Historical Society was formally created with Judge A.F. Bray as its first President.
As a thank you to our Society members, whose support has allowed CCCHS to grow and thrive for 75 years, we are taking you back to 1951!
